Operative Articulation is architecture. Opertive Articulation entails the renaissance of a particular scalar condition in architecture, facilitated-if not overtly necessitated-by the architectural adaptation of digital design and fabrication technologies and the potential for infinite specification in the topological generation of form. The scale-less quality of digital modeling software necessitates the adaptation, rather than blind adoption, of the tools in order to effectively communicate in an architectural language. This new paradigm demands an architectural articulation of surface to be reinstated at the point of interface.

Operative Articulation exists in the territory of the architectural micro-scale and, thus, excludes extra-disciplinary attempts to imbue the architectural surface with perceived depth, detail and complexity. Instead, architecture must reclaim this territory lost to reinvigorate architectural tactility and to prevent the misappropriation of the essential role of texture in architecture to extra-disciplinary endeavors. The preferred alternative entails the reintroduction of intricacy to surface, not as graphics or appliqué, but as performative surface condition operating within the logic systems of a broader architectural agenda.

Operative Articulation is technique. As a technique, Operative Articulation exists in a condition of complete interiority to the discipline of architecture and differs from the traditional understanding of ornament as a by-product of design. Operative Articulation does not encrust or adorn the architectural surface; rather, Operative Articulation is the technique by which to generate surface, space, detail, ornament.

Operative Articulation operates and informs from the micro-scale, dictating, through its particular geometric and topological logics, the form of the macro-scale.
